Matthew C. Irish is a vice president within O’Neill and Associates’ government relations practice. Drawing upon his seven years of experience with the Massachusetts state legislature and on numerous political campaigns, Mr. Irish develops and implements public affairs strategies that help clients reach their goals on the municipal, state, and federal levels.
His clients have included Pepsi, Hewlett-Packard, Safelite Autoglass, Environmental Defense, Sovereign Bank, Utility Workers of America Local 369, Invest Northern Ireland, the Head of the Charles Regatta and the Charles River Conservancy.
Prior to joining O’Neill and Associates, Mr. Irish served for three years as chief of staff for Massachusetts State Senator Steven Tolman, representing parts of Boston, Cambridge, Belmont, Waltham, and Watertown. In this role, Mr. Irish oversaw and directed all legislative, budgetary, media, personnel and administrative issues and acted as media spokesman. Before becoming chief of staff, Mr. Irish served as Senator Tolman’s senior legislative aide and staff director. Mr. Irish began his career as a press assistant to then U.S. Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle.
Mr. Irish graduated from UMASS Amherst with a bachelor’s degree in political science after spending his junior year abroad at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. He holds two graduate degrees: a master’s in modern Irish history and Irish America from Boston College as well as a master's in public affairs from the John W. McCormack Graduate School of Policy Studies at UMASS Boston.
Mr. Irish is involved in a number of non-profit organizations, particularly in his hometown of Worcester, Mass. He sits on the Board of Directors of the Worcester Community Housing Resources Inc. and is an Alumni Coordinator for Saint John’s High School.
