COVID-19 – City of Boston Update 3-29-2020

On Sunday, March 29, 2020 Mayor Walsh addressed the media outside of Boston City Hall.

  • 614 cases in Boston. 47 full recovery, 2 deaths in Boston.
  • Homeless community – 1st confirmed case. City building strong support system. Hundreds of new beds being secured for this community. Suffolk University repurposing a building with Pine Street Inn. New facility at 1515 Comm Ave in Brighton for homeless community as well. 112 Southampton St shelter has become a quarantine and isolation center with the help of Suffolk Construction.
  • Outreach continues to people gathering at Mass Ave/Melnea Cass  intersection.
  • City is currently hiring and looking for help with outreach to vulnerable residents.
  • People are still gathering in groups, playing sports in parks. People still gathering in parking lots socializing. Zip ties on basketball hoops and new signage going up to discourage this. Last resort is to lock down the Parks which Mayor does not want to do.
  • Realtors still holding open houses – please stop. Please do this by appointment only Mayor says.
  • Do not show up in an emergency room if you feel sick, please call heath providers first.
  • Suffolk Downs testing site is open and operating for Boston’s first responders.
  • Boston Police no longer issuing parking tickets to Boston residents. People with Boston resident stickers can park at meters. Tickets won’t be issued on street sweeping days. Handicap parking still enforced.
  • BPS continues to provide food and hygiene products to students and families. Students have received 21,000 Chromebooks.
