Massachusetts-based Abiomed to Purchase U.S. Headquarters in Danvers

December 18, 2015

Rapidly expanding medical device company Abiomed announced on Wednesday it is buying is U.S. headquarters in Danvers.

Abiomed, one of the fastest growing medical device companies in the nation and the manufacturer of the world’s smallest heart pump, is deepening its commitment to Massachusetts with the purchase of the property located at 18-22 Cherry Hill Drive, which was formerly leased by the company.

The announcement comes during a year of tremendous growth for Abiomed. Earlier this year, the company received two new FDA approvals that open the door to new treatment options for tens of thousands of U.S. patients who currently have few, if any, treatment options.

One targets patients who are turned down for heart surgery or traditional percutaneous stenting procedures because the risks are too high. The Impella 2.5 is the only FDA approved device that helps these patients maintain stable heart function and circulation during these high-risk procedures. Another approval helps those battling right-sided heart failure – which occurs in extremely sick patients that have little to no options left.

This summer, Abiomed also announced a major expansion of its Danvers headquarters — adding new manufacturing and research capabilities and 100 new jobs. Over the past two years, Abiomed has already added 150 jobs in the Commonwealth.

Abiomed reached a deal to purchase the 12-acre property from Massachusetts-based Thibeault Nominee Trust. The deal is expected to close next month.
