National Braille Press Announces Its 2022 Boston Marathon® Team: Casey Blue James and Peter Carty

April 4, 2022

(Boston, MA) – April 4, 2022 – National Braille Press (NBP) announced that Casey Blue James and Peter Carty have volunteered to run the 2022 Boston Marathon® in support of braille literacy as the organization approaches its 95th year of service. These volunteer runners are helping NBP to support braille literacy by running in the Boston Marathon on Monday, April 18, 2022.

“We are grateful to have the opportunity to participate in this year’s Boston Marathon® thanks to Casey Blue James and Peter Carty,” said Brian Mac Donald, President of National Braille Press. “We look forward to cheering them on as they run the 26.2 miles from Hopkinton to Back Bay.”

In preparation for the 126th Boston Marathon®, James and Carty have trained in the snow, swirling winds, and bone-chilling cold to prepare for the iconic race.  During their training, they will have collectively run close to one-thousand miles. Their goal is not only to run one of the world’s most challenging races but to help NBP make braille materials more affordable and bring awareness to braille literacy. The funds raised will help NBP continue to support a lifetime of opportunity for blind children and adults through braille literacy and provide access to information that empowers blind people to engage in work, family, and community affairs.

James, a native of Chicago and a Yale graduate, is a self-described bookworm living in Queens, NY, who spends her days working in book publishing at Penguin Random House. This is her third marathon, and her cousin, Robin Sheffler, was a runner for NBP in the Boston Marathon held in October of 2021. “Between my love of running, my passion for and commitment to books, and my belief in supporting literacy and accessibility in any way I can, I feel very drawn toward this opportunity to represent National Braille Press through running the marathon. I am incredibly inspired by your mission and grateful for the important work you are doing in the publishing community,” said James.

Carty, a former rugby player from Brooklyn, NY, started running after college when he stopped playing sports and needed a new challenge. As a Holy Cross College alum, he is inspired to serve others and is excited about the opportunity to raise awareness for braille literacy. He understands the importance of breaking down barriers in education and in everyday life for the blind community to have equal access to literacy. Carty’s goal is to finish the Boston Marathon in under three hours, his third marathon this year. “It’s an honor to help spread knowledge of the organization and raise some money in the process so NBP can continue doing great work that helps so many people,” said Peter Carty.
